A couple days in one post!
Our day in second, and last, day in Munich started with us visiting the Dachau Concentration camp. The first concentration camp built by the Nazi’s, Dachau was a great visit for all of us. Our tour guide, Stefani, did an excellent job showing us around the different areas of the camp. Many of the kids had said earlier this year that they wanted to visit one of the concentration camps, and after our tour I don’t think any of them regret there decision. Even though it was difficult to hear and see at times, our tour was definitely worthwhile.
After Dachau we spent a couple hours in the Marienplatz again, and then we were off to the airport. As opposed to Paris, making it to the Munich Airport by train was very simple, and we were very glad that once we arrived in Rome we had a car service to take us to our hotel. Navigating the Roma bus or subway system with all our luggage after 10 p.m. would have been a nightmare, but instead a man standing there with “Mynatt” on the cardboard lead us to our small bus, packed our luggage up, drove the frighteningly narrow and busy streets of Rome, and dropped us at the doorstep of our awesome little hotel. Right in the middle of the city, we are within walking distance of Vatican City and St. Peters Basilica, the Coliseum, Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.
Our first day in Rome was a long and difficult day, but well worth it. Our first stop was a tour of the Vatican. Our tour guide, Claudia, gave us our money’s worth of information as she showed us the ins and outs of the Museum, the Papel Residence and gardens, and finally the Sistine Chapel. After a quick lunch we hopped in the incredibly long line to get into St. Peter’s Basilica. Even though the line was long (It stretched about 2/3 of the way around the square beneath St. Peters) it moved fairly quickly and we were able to explore the largest church in the world. At the end we climbed to the top of the Dome and had a great view over the city. After a steep climb and decent and a long day we rested our tired feet for an hour or so in the hotel and then made a quick stop by the Pantheon, the Piazza Nuevona and finally dinner at a nice little Italian restaurant. On the way back to the hotel we stopped to buy soccer jerseys for the boys, purses
for the girls and gelato for everyone. Tomorrow we’re off to the Coliseum and the Spanish Steps!
